How do we determine the price of your precious stone?

When our experienced diamond dealers assess your gemstone, they consider various factors. Firstly, we identify the type of stone in your jewelry to ensure authenticity and prevent imitations. In the case of colored stones, we distinguish between precious (e.g. emerald, ruby or sapphire) and semi-precious stones (such as tourmaline, garnet, spinel, topaz, etc.).

For diamonds and precious stones, we conduct a comprehensive appraisal to determine their precise value. Our skilled diamond dealers take into account the “4C’s” – color, clarity, cut, and carat weight, which vary slightly for gemstones compared to diamonds:

“Cut grade” of the diamond

The cut of a gemstone maximizes its brilliance, luster, and overall beauty, making it an essential factor in determining value. A well-cut gemstone is more valuable than a poorly cut one.

Clarity

Clarity is determined by magnifying the gemstone 10x to examine impurities. A pure gemstone has higher quality and value, depending on impurity size, color, and location.

Color

Color is the most important factor in determining the value of a gemstone. The most valuable stones have a pure, vivid, and intense color with few inclusions. For instance, “Pigeon Blood” and “Royal Blue” are the most valuable colors for rubies and sapphires, respectively. Treatments to enhance color play an important role, but untreated stones like unheated rubies and sapphires with natural color are more valuable. The amount of oil in emeralds also affects their value.

Carat

Carat refers to the weight of your precious stone. This weight comes from the seed of a carob tree, which weighs 0.2 grams and was used in the past as a counterweight on the scales to weigh gems. A carat is therefore equivalent to 0.2 grams or 100 points and is always expressed as a decimal number with 2 decimal places (for example: 1.50 ct or 150 points). The higher the carat weight, the rarer the stone, which increases its value.

Lastly, the origin of the gemstone influences its value. Colombian emeralds, Burmese rubies, and sapphires from Sri Lanka (Ceylon) are highly valued due to their inclusions and color shades.

Which precious stones spark our interest?

We are mainly interested in rubies, emeralds and blue sapphires from Burma, Colombia and Sri Lanka (Ceylon). We have the most knowledge about these types of gemstones and can make an accurate estimate and offer you a fair price.
